Title: BW1 on Windows 7/8/10
Post by: Handsome Matt on Dec 13, 2015, 12:11 pm
Black and White was released in 2001, it's over 15 years old. And sadly it hasn't aged well, there are a magnitude of issues just managing to install it before you hit the magnitude of issues involved in actually playing the game.

tldr; installing

1: Install Black & White base game via Setup.exe with "Run as Administrator".
2: Install Patch 1.1, Patch 1.2, Patch 1.4 (links below) all with "Run as Administrator".
3: Download and install all addons with "Run as Administrator".
4: Right Click runblack.exe, and under the Compatibility tab, check Run this program as an administrator and nothing else.
5: Copy the Audio folder from the CD to the game installation directory to fix issues with the music not playing.

Installing The Game

Before you start this guide I recommend uninstalling anything you might've tried installing beforehand; so run the uninstaller, delete the folder where you installed Black & White and remove any Windows registry keys that were left behind:

If you are on a 32 bit system, youíll want to delete the following registry keys:

Code: [Select]
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White Clan Patch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White Patch
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2309910519-2795697514-4011825439-1000\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White

If you are on a 64 bit system, youíll want to delete the following registry keys:

Code: [Select]
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White Clan Patch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White Patch
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2309910519-2795697514-4011825439-1000\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White
"Run as Administrator"). You can install the game anywhere you want. At the end of the installation, it will ask you if you want to play the game. Select no.

At this point you can install any addons you want, I recommend getting the four additional creatures; the leopard (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=135), the mandrill (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=136), the gorilla (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=133) and the horse (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=134) as well as the villager banter add-on (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=139). You can download the football add-on (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=138) now too, but you canít install it until after you patch the game. All addons must be installed using Run as Administrator" Note that after each add-on you install you will get the Program Compatibility Assistant asking you whether or not the program installed correctly. You can select this program installed correctly for each.

Before you go patch crazy and install the latest one, listen; there were a total of three patches released, patch 1.1 (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=129), patch 1.2 (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=130) and patch 1.3 (http://www.bwfiles.com/files/file.php?id=131). Patch 1.3 only adds support for the P5 glove. If you happen to have one of these, then youíll want to get patch 1.3 but if you donít youíll want to stick with patch 1.2.

In theory, patch 1.3 includes all the fixes and additions from both patches 1.1 and 1.2 and patch 1.2 includes the fixes from patch 1.1. this means you should be able to just install the patch for the final target version you want, but I had some problems that I think were related to the patch not quite installing correctly. There is no harm in installing each patch individually, so I strongly recommend that you do it in this order:
Now you can install the football add-on if you wish.

Without the fan patch, the game will be completely unplayable, so make sure you don't skip that step. (note to self: write about directdraw wrapper, like gog)

Next, you have to copy the audio files from the CD if you want to have music at all, open your CD folder, open your installation folder and just copy the files across.

Configuring The Game (with Fan Patch)

I've included a very simple Setup.exe with the fan patch, simply run it select your resolution (supports all resolutions your monitor can handle) and set your graphic level and you're done, no messy registry editing.

Configuring The Game (without Fan Patch)

If you don't want to use the fan patch you can always just run the Setup.exe found in your installation directory. Setup.exe should be run as an administrator or else it won't work.

Once open, select Maximum Detail and do not touch Custom Detail, if you touch Custom Detail everything will break Maximum Detail is the best option, custom detail is broken and will actively degrade your graphic quality.

Setting your resolution to anything can be done like so:
Quote
* Run <path-to-game>\Setup.exe as an administrator and adjust your settings. Set your resolution to anything else.
* Open the Registry Editor.
* Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White\BWSetup.
* Look for ScreenH and ScreenW.
* Enter your resolution for each value in decimal mode.

Playing The Game

When starting the game, first try with nothing set, if that doesn't work; try setting runblack.exe to run as administrator, this will change the save directory however so be careful. Compatibility mode is not recommended.

If you have any issues please leave a reply below and I'll do my best to help you.
Have fun playing Black and White :)

Running on Mac?

Good luck![/list][/list]

Matt,

I am not sure if more people are having the same problem, but Windows 7 security patch KB3086255 makes old games like Black & White and the Sims unable to run.
Please look into this issue and see if has any effect on your installation guide.

I believe this Windows Update removes Safedisc drivers, my fan patch mentioned in the OP removes Safedisc protection from the exe and makes it run fine. :)

To uninstall just run the uninstaller, if that works or doesn't you can then delete the game folder files and then delete the registry keys in the opening post.

This guide is absolutely perfect for the most part. I've gotten the game up and running but I'm still running into two issues. The first of which is the football addon still isn't working (even in Creature Isle!), but I suppose there's no way around that so long as I'm using windows 7 (all other addons work, however). Is there any way around this or is it just one of those things that can't be helped?

The more major issue I'm having is crashing and subsequent corruption of my save files. A few times during my playthrough I would get the "lh.exe has stopped working" out of nowhere and lose quite a bit of progress. Thankfully, the damage wasn't too bad due to autosave. Things came to an unfortunate end at the end of land 2, which upon clicking the golden reward scrolls that leads to land 3 via the vortex, the game would autosave, then proceed to crash. When I loaded it back up, I was several hours behind, despite the game autosaving many, many times before that (I think it brought me back to when Khazar was still alive). I tried loading every file I could find in the save room, including both the manual and auto ones, but they would all bring me back to a very old save.

This is rather frustrating to say the least. :sorry

I know how to fix the addons, I'll do that when I get some time. As for the auto save, ehh no idea why it isn't working as intended will need more investigation. Any other bugs you can find I'll try and fix them all when I get some free time soon.

Post by: CosmoClock21 on Feb 26, 2016, 11:21 pm
Looks like the new patch messed with something. Not only is the game not going full screen (the screen is windowed yet goes far into the right side of the screen) and showing version 1.00, but it appears to keep the lh process running even when you exit out of the program.
I'll try to get some screenshots up later. I'm sure it's something minor. Thank you for your effort in the first place, though.

EDIT: Same thing is happening, even with the installer. Looks like it's not only forcing it into windowed mode (even if you don't tick the windowed box), but also setting the resolution very low. I've actually managed to upload a pic this time with my ever-amazing MS paint printscreen skills.

Uploaded, check the main post - it's now an installer figured it'd be much easier to distribute it like this. Fixed the forced window mode, some graphical bugs, some widescreen bugs.

Your b&w looks amazing on that screenshot. I installed patch 1.3 and 1.4 but my textures are blurred all the time and they don't look that sharp as yours, I changed all the settings back in 1.2 and 1.3 but render distance is still too low, it worked better or perfectly before formatting about 2 years ago (same pc and windows 7). I don't know what to do :rolleyes

Try the latest 1.4 and make sure you run the configuration tool included, just set it to max details and save. That's all my game is, no compatibility options, no nothing.

I played this game about 2 years ago and I decided to clean my HDD, I thought that "copy, paste" will keep my save data from BW,but I was horribly WRONG.. I installed BW yesterday and I was struggling with those folders, after some time, I've read on forums about save data from this game. I only copied my "Profile" folder, you know the rest. The game was crashing on save, my creature forgot all spells and stuff so I have to start all over again... But there is 1.2 and your 1.4 patch. I don't know which should I use for future backups and multiplayer game.

i cant start the Fan Patch setup.exe

I have the same problem. Before 2 or 3 weeks i had installed the fan patch and played a lot. I uninstalled the game and now me and a friend of mine want to play multiplayer. We instaled 1.1, 1.2  and he installed the fan patch. When i click on the application i notice that in the task manager processes i have 3 instances of the BWFanPatchInstaller.exe. Nothing loads up....  :help

BTW in gog you can vote so for black and white. If it gets enough votes they will add it in gog and we will be able buy the game and have support for it.

Hi there, my problem is with the installation of the patches. I have the game installed in C:\Games\Black & White and when I try to apply the patches I get the following messages; "Neither command line parameter specified is an existing directory" and "You do not have the correct version of Black & White installed to use ". Only thing I've done after the install is add the creature unlocks and Village Banter. Have also tried running patches as admin. and no joy...Any and all help is more than welcome.

And figured out my mistake. Got it patched an running, fingers crossed all continues to go well. Matt, you're a legend for this fixes/patches. :)

Hello,

I've followed the installation guide and when I try and start the game I get an error message saying the following: "The program can't start because IFC22.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".

Is there a quick fix that I can use that doesn't involve me reinstalling it?

EDIT - Nevermind, I've managed to fix it :)

The original post says you should run it in admin mode. Compability mode is not recommended.
I can confirm that, works completely fine with these settings.

Hi, I'm just trying to run the game under windows 10 - at first it worked (version 1.1), but then on isle 3 I suddenly ran into these save game problems, so I tried installing the game again.
I installed patch 1.2 and now the game doesn't start at all.

I followed the installation instructions from this thread, but I couldn't install the fan patch because the download doesn't work. It just stops after 1 second or something.
Am I the only one with that problem?

Edit: Ok, seems like my virus scanner made the download fail. Maybe I should try something else then.

Yeah. You need to have patch 1.3 installed for it to run properly.
Title: Re: BW1 on Windows 7/8/10
Post by: Y.T. on May 17, 2016, 09:35 pm
Um, but the description says that patch is only needed if you have a p5 glove.

I've installed the game again for now and with patch 1.100 (and modified exe), it starts.
Did you have the same problems or do you mean the fan patch? Someone here wrote that the game needs that to run properly after patching. But since I can't get this...
Title: Re: BW1 on Windows 7/8/10
Post by: Gremxula on May 18, 2016, 06:44 am
Yes the 1.3 patch is for glove users only although B&W can mostly run without the glove.
From memory...
1.1 game fixes
1.2 "clan patch" is mainly for MP but seems to be 99.9% OK for SP.

On a previous PC I installed B&W to an old flash drive  that I kept plugged into a spare USB port and it worker fine. The main thing to remember is to  install B&W almost anywhere but the default settings, as since the game came out Windows has changed.

Default B&W install with my patch on top should be all that's required to run the game as flawlessly as possible with no compatibility issues.

I wanted to try your patch, Handsome Matt, but I really can't get it to my pc. I've tried downloading from another machine where it was no problem and transfering via dropbox, but my virus scanner kills it while downloading (with different browsers and from different servers) - unlike e.g. a modified .exe I got elsewhere. It doesn't even show a message why it stopped the download.

I don't want to bug you about that, I respect your work, but for now I guess I'm stuck with version 1.00. But I wanted to leave that feedback / problem with the virus scanner here (it's avast), maybe this can help other players who also can't download your patch because of that. And who maybe are willing to deactivate their scanner for this.

Handsome Matt,

Do you mean that I should be able to install patch 1.4 without first installing the 1.1 and 1.2 patches? Just install game, apply addons, then install the fan patch directly?

Also, is it normal for the Level of Detail (LoD) to be so poor? I have it set to Maximum Detail using your setup, and when I get more than a few feet from the villagers, they instantly change to the worst possible model. Is this normal? Is there anyway to modify this?

I have to be zoomed in almost completely to see the details of the villagers. When zooming out even a tiny amount, they transform into horrible little triangles with no detail.

Here's an image to show it:

About details in the game all the game DATA is less than 240 meg. The level of detail was good enough for an average PC in 2001.
Just to put it into perspective a modern game DATA can have 24 GB or more.
That's 240 v 24,000 or B&W1 has only 1% of the graphics detail of a modern game.

Thanks for the awesome work, Handsome Matt! I played the original game on Windows 10, not without problems, but at least I still can do it after 15 years!

By any chance, would you make the same patch for the Creature Isle addon? I can run it, but it looks awful because of the low-resolution textures problem.

I know this thread is old but hoping to get some help...first off, thank you so much! I actually wreaked my original copy of B&W trying to get it to work. I luckily had back ups. The thing I needed the whole time was that fan patch. You're my savior!
Now the issue is although B&W works fine, Creature Isle won't start up at all. Any suggestions?

I am using Windows 10 64-bit, GTX 750 and have tried everything I could find on the Internet but no work... I have lost my creature stats due to the effort to reinstall and I just kept the copy of Profile folder. I am desperated now, ahihi, huhu.

Other troubles?

If you're still having issues there's always this patch from an unknown source (http://bawsite.com/ourfiles.html) I have no experience with it and I don't exactly like the guy hosting it, but if it works for you go for it.

Running on Mac?

Good luck!

I have installed all the patches as shown above for B&W1 on Win10.
The game started OK but wouldn't save. As soon as I left the temple, and return, all the save pictures are blank again.

remedy:
1. play as administrator (mark the tag in the shortcut properties button)
2. If that doesn't solve the problem, navigate to the B&W installation folder in your programs folder.
right-click on the B&W folder.
Click properties.
Click the security tab.
Highlight each listed user and make sure they have full control of the folder.
If that is not the case, click the advanced button and change the permissions to allow full control.
That resolved the problem for me and I can finally play this game again.

Thank you for the fan patch.

BTW: how do I change user name that it isn't my email? Tx

Everything working fine for me on Windows 10, my only problem is that it seems the LOD is not updating, cliffs are staying on the lowest LOD even when close up, they are not smooth. Maximum detail is set.

Hello! I was able to use your guide to get B&W working on my laptop and until yesterday the game has been working almost perfectly. After doing a lot of prep (food, wood and miracles) I'm ready to move to the next world and the portal isn't there... They say "throw something in" and not only is there no portal visually but you also can't put anything through it... So at this point I can't move further in the game. Any ideas?

I'm assuming this tutorial does not require the CD to play the game since you copy the music files directly over? Or do I need a no-cd patch as well?

if it doesn't work after the 1.2/1.3 patch, you need the no cd patch. if no music plays ingame, you can copy over the audio directory from your cd in your b&w directory.

The fan patch is also a no cd patch since the ability to verify the game installation via CD broke in Windows 8 making a no cd patch a requirement to run the game. You need to copy the audio folder over if you do not play the game with the CD inserted.

Ok, I'll give it a go and let you know. I have the CD and use Windows 7. Just been creating an HD full of all my old classic games. Got most of the DOS ones to work (Doom, Tom Radier, etc.), now working on all the Windows 9x ones like Tomb Raider II-III and this one. Just prefer not to need to pop in the CD for each game and have found workarounds on each one thus far. I'm sure mounting the files or creating an ISO would work, but the patches or updates have made some pretty easy. Thank you. Will report back later...

When I try to run the fan patch or the setup.exe that came with the game, I get prompted to install the .NET Framework 3.5. It never seems to work though, I've been trying to find a way to install that windows feature for days.

Is there some workaround that renders the .NET Framework 3.5 unnecessary?

Hi,
I just wanted to say thanks because the fan patch has fixed an issue I've had with the game - the mouse cursor would "flicker" and its position would pop back and forth between its true position and somewhere around the bottom right corner.
The issue may have been related to D3DWindower being used to run the game. It's really annoying to run lower resolution games in full screen with a multi-monitor setup so I kind of had to, but thanks to the patch, not anymore!

Speaking of which, I've noticed that the game crashes upon launch if I set the resolution higher than 2049 pixels on either axis (I used regedit to figure out the exact limit), could this be a hard limit of the game with frame buffer sizes or texture sizes? (2048 used to be the limit for texture resolutions long ago, though it's weird that 2049 still works)
This issue applies to fullscreen mode aswell.

Widescreen resolutions above full HD (or even 1080p ultrawide) might be affected unless the issue is specific to my PC somehow.
I can play on a secondary 1080p screen for now so it's not unplayable but as you might imagine I'd love to take advantage of my 4k screen :)

EDIT: The game itself doesnt give much of an error, it's the windows crash popup that appears. However in hopes of being helpful here's what it contains

Hi, that error is caused by an integer overflow, I think this is caused by the representation of the number of pixels exceeding the data type of a short (16 bits) - No real way to solve it other then rewriting a lot of graphics rendering code - or by running in just 1080p

None of the creature addons for the base game are working.

I've tried installing them before installing any patches.

Then I tried installing them over patch 2 before the fan patch.

Then I tried installing them with just a cracked version 1.2 to see if they'd work, they won't even show up on V1.2.

Every time I click the creature hut he just says he doesn't have any special creatures.

I'm at a loss, I'm on Windows 10 and tried using the BaW Patch but it didn't work either. Can anyone help? Does anyone maybe just have the raw files I could just drag and drop instead of using the BROKEN installers?

Another issue I'm having is saving custom keybindings or God symbols.

I can change my God Symbol into say a heart or smiley face but if I go back to the options menu it resets to the eclipse, and seems to randomly reset to eclipse sometimes.

And my custom keybindings won't save at all. I normally change the default Previous Leash and Next Leash commands to be more accessible but can't for some reason. Anyone have a clue of what to do about this?

The game stores the special creatures as a registry key basically unlocking them in the base game. The registry key can be found in this path:

Code: [Select]
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Lionhead Studios Ltd/Black & White/BWSetup/BWFeatureKey
You can adjust this value manually by double clicking it and setting the following values (these are with all creatures unlocked):

Code: [Select]
E3 71 F5 8C A6 58 00 5E
47 0C 51 92 43 70 C2 8B

I'll throw the registry edits into the installer later on as an option.

Key bindings are also stored in the Windows Registry - your PC seems to be struggling to write to it for some reason, have you tried running the game as an administrator?

I always run the game as admin, and with XP Service Pack 2 or 3 compatibility mode.

Not sure why it won't save to registry.

DERP! I just realized I didn't click to extend the Black & White directory  :no

However, I was still missing the BWFeatureKey entry. I didn't know how to get it so I reinstalled the whole game as administrator, then installed up to patch 3 and downloaded the needed DLL file for that, then installed the BawPatch, and finally THAT gave me the registry entry.

Hey Matt,

I downloaded the game, since I lost my CD from 2001. But it seems there's an issue with the download?

I've tried to install the patches in the order you suggested, but when installing 1.1 I get the message: "Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file content do not match."

I get the same message from patch 1.2's installation. Skipping 1.3 for obvious reasons. I'm then forced to go directly to fan patch 1.4, which seems to install just fine.

Besides that, I followed your guide to a T - But my game keeps crashing just a few seconds after going on the very first loading screen: "IH has stopped working.".

I've tried uninstall the game, as per your instructions (Except for the fact that I can't find any registry keys under windows. Not even a single folder called Lionhead), and then reinstalled it.
I feel like I've tried everything: High or low resolution, minimum or maximum graphics, windowed or fullscreen, with or without sound - Nothing seems to work.
Running Runblack.exe as Administrator doesn't fix it, either. I even tried running it in Compatibility Mode, and that surprisingly didn't do anything either. I'm running fast out of ideas.

Thanks in advance!

Regards

Razid

Edit: It seems I've fixed it - A complete fresh download seemed to do the trick. Now to actually enter the game and see how it runs  :yourock:

2nd Edit: The game works perfectly as long as I don't go windowed mode. If I do, I can't quite see the bottom and I get windows error sounds whenever I press MMB or Alt+1 or 2  :happytears:

Thanks a lot for the guide! You're amazing! <3

I lost all my save progress in the process, but I finally managed to fix all of the problems I've been having by completing the following steps.
No Windows Compatibility Mode used at any part of the process, other than Run as Administrator. XP service pack compatibility can cause problems apparently.

1: Install Black & White base game via Setup.exe with "Run as Administrator" to a custom location on the Desktop.
(Warning: If you change the install directory, the installer doesn't create a folder by default, so you should create a new folder just for this game)

2: Install Patch 1, Patch 2, then Patch 3.

3: Download the p5dll.zip and extract p5dll.dll to the install directory.

4: Download and install all addons with "Run as Administrator".

5: Download BaW_Patch_2.exe and extract it to the install directory. Run it as Administrator and type fix for all commands.

6: Install the Fanpatch 1.4 (or higher if a new one's out when you read this) with Run as Administrator option.

7: Right Click runblack.exe, and under the Compatibility tab, check Run this program as an administrator and nothing else.

8: If you make a shortcut and it crashes or doesn't launch properly despite pointing to runblack.exe in administrator mode, try right clicking the shortcut, then under the Shortcut tab click Advanced, and check Run as Administrator.

And that should do it, it took me all of those ridiculous steps to restore basic functionality that I had when the game was new, but it looks great and runs great with the fan patch and it was worth the hassle.

I updated the opening post with amendments to running stuff as admin. As for a lot of what you said, you shouldn't touch 1.3 or p5dll.dll at all, it was a patch meant to enable compatibility with a specific peripheral device. And 1.4 includes the same and more patches than BaW_Patch_2.exe does, using them together can cause issues.

In the end you can cut it down to simply:

1: Install Black & White base game via Setup.exe with "Run as Administrator".

2: Install Patch 1.1, Patch 1.2, Patch 1.4 all with "Run as Administrator".

3: Download and install all addons with "Run as Administrator".

4: Right Click runblack.exe, and under the Compatibility tab, check Run this program as an administrator and nothing else.

5: Copy the Audio folder from the CD to the game installation directory to fix issues with the music not playing.

Misc: If you make a shortcut and it crashes or doesn't launch properly despite pointing to runblack.exe in administrator mode, try right clicking the shortcut, then under the Shortcut tab click Advanced, and check Run as Administrator.

Needing to install the base game and all of the addons as an administrator is what threw me, I've never had to do that with any game before.

For a game that came out in 2001 B&W holds up surprisingly well today. Good to know I don't need BawPatch I was planning to install this on another system.

Yeah installing as an administrator became a requirement since Windows Vista. But the installers weren't flagged to do so, unlike modern installers. That's why most things fish up I think :(

Good to hear it's all working for you now though :D

Hi, I am encountering quite a problem.

After installing the game like this, everything works perfectly, absolutely no performance issue, however the middle click on the mouse simply refuses to work when the game is ran as an administrator and I have no idea why that is. If I don't run the game as an administrator, the middle click works perfectly, but as soon as I run it as an administrator, it stops working.

This is rather infuriating since I have always played this game with the middle click for a faster and more efficient camera control so I definitely don't want to let go of it, but if I don't run the game as an administrator the game does not save properly.

I am using a Logitech Zone Touch Mouse T400, I have the latest driver and I did enable the middle click in Set Point. I am on Windows 10 64 bit.

EDIT: I have managed to fix it. After some research, I found out that "Customized button assignments do not work in Windows Safe Mode or when you open a program using the Run as administrator command." ( https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-ca/support/troubleshooting/mouse/using-mouse-buttons (https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-ca/support/troubleshooting/mouse/using-mouse-buttons) ). Upon further investigation, I also found out that "To enable [customized] mouse [buttons] (which is needed for the middle click on the T400 to actually act as a middle click), open the application without administrator credentials (as I stated in my original post), or log on to Windows as an administrator." ( https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-ca/support/how-to/mouse/reassign-buttons (https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-ca/support/how-to/mouse/reassign-buttons) ). Since I am already the administrator of this PC, I thought it should already work, but then it struck me that just about every program on windows 10 requires to be ran as administrator manually in order to work correctly, and so I thought "let's try restoring the t400 button mapping to default, then running Set Point (Logitech's driver assistant/button mapper) as an administrator and THEN change the middle click to be a middle click!"

And it worked. Basically, the problem was that my t400's button mapping was not a part of the administrator settings since I never ran Set Point as an administrator. Therefore, the game would not recognize its settings when ran as an administrator since doing so only enables the administrator settings. Running Set Point as an administrator to enable the middle click made it a part of those settings which the game can now run with when ran as an administrator.

If it ever happens to you, now you know what to do! Except it will not be Set Point if you don't have a Logitech mouse, but the solution is the same. Hope this helps!

EDIT 2: When the computer restarts, Set Point automattically opens, but not as administrator. Therefore, I have to exit set point and run it again as administrator everytime I restart the computer, otherwise the middle click will not work in B&W when ran as administrator.

Not to revive a dead topic or anything.
I had the "lh has stopped working" - and like an idiot I assumed I was at fault, because lets face it, good chances.
I reinstalled nearly 10 times, I CAN NOT MAKE THE fishing THING WORK, in fullscreen, BUT I changed to windowed and have a program to make it go fullscreen windowed (which I prefer because dual monitors) and it works fine. I have no clue what the difference is from fullscreen to windowed, but I could not make it work with fullscreen.
Just to anyone if they too are banging their head into their keyboard for 1 hour + over this.

Another possible fix for some from my own experiences:

I had problems with "Lh has stopped working" error, too, letting the game crash after the first intro video.

The problem was I tried to install everything into a hd not in the "c" root directory, it was "d" in my case.

The game installed just fine, but when trying to install the first two official patches, I got following error: "Neither command line specified is an existing directory" and something like "not the correct version of B&W installed".

So I kept with just installing the fan patch, which didn't work and let the game crash as described before.

When I changed to c directory, the first two patches installed just fine, and everything worked out splendidly.
With "c" as root, B&W ran equally nice on both a WIN7 64 and a WIN10 64 system!

Cheers!

Followed the instructions. Game plays the intro, and crashes at the first loading screen with a "lh stopped working" every time. Did multiple clean uninstalls and nothing has changed.

Trying to run it on Windows 7 64. Tried in both windowed and fullscreen with same results. I'm completely stumped. Installing by running setup from an ISO and following all steps. Used admin for each installation.

Did you install the fan patch, are you running with any compatibility settings, admin mode, what are your system specs, don't try and put a nocd crack over the fan patch also, it includes one.

Any other info you can give me about the crash (debug info) would greatly help.

Hope someone can help me.

I'm installing BW1 on windows 10 x64 using the guide on this post and the game works perfectly except for a scalation problem. When i run the game, it looks like this.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cev0ukqt19ilyxj/BW.jpg?dl=0

I'm using a tv 32" as a monitor, so i think this might be a problem. Using borderless gamming or other external solutions don't fix that, and the setup (1.4 patch) seems to change the registers perfectly.

Thx for the help :P.

I think DPI scaling in Windows messes up the resolution. You could try running it in windowed mode perhaps. Or alternatively change the scaling of your Windows to 100% you can do that from the display settings menu:

Hi.

I recently switched to Windows 10 and manually changed the resolution to match my laptop resolution (1366 x 768)
However now during cinematics, the black bars that appear on the top and bottom are missing.

This wasn't an issue on Windows 8.
Any idea?

Thanks
